Waking Up the Wardrobe: The Met’s “Sleeping Beauties” Reimagines Fashion of 2024

A Multi-Sensory Fashion Experience: The Met's "Sleeping Beauties"

Forget flat fashion photos on social media. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” invites you to experience clothing in a whole new way.

The exhibition’s title refers to the delicate garments, some centuries old, that are typically preserved and rarely displayed. Curator Andrew Bolton aims to bring these “sleeping beauties” back to life by engaging all your senses.

Beyond Sight: Smells, Sounds, and Textures

Imagine walking through a museum and not just seeing a historic gown, but also smelling the perfume that its original wearer might have used, or hearing the swish of its silk skirt as it moved. “Sleeping Beauties” uses innovative techniques to do just that.

Let you inform about Met Gala 2024

Scent Recreations: In a room dedicated to socialite Millicent Rogers’ daring style, a special fragrance evokes her scent, based on molecules found on her clothes and hints of her natural body odor

Soundscapes: The exhibit brings garments to life with sound effects. You might hear the satisfying “scroop” of silk taffeta beside a display of grand gowns, or the clatter of seashell paillettes near an Alexander McQueen dress.

Nature as Inspiration

The exhibition is organized by themes from the natural world: flowers, insects, birds, and the sea. You’ll see stunning examples of how designers incorporated these elements:

Floral Fantasies: From a blurry digital floral print on a Loewe dress to an embroidered Yves Saint Laurent jacket inspired by Van Gogh’s Irises, flowers bloom throughout the exhibit.

A Touch of the Future

The exhibit also features innovative designs that push the boundaries of fashion:

Living Art: A coat by Jonathan Anderson of Loewe features live grass growing on it, symbolizing the ephemeral nature of fashion.

AI Chatbot Companion: The final gallery showcases a streamlined wedding gown worn by socialite Natalie Potter. A custom AI chatbot answers questions about Potter’s life, adding another layer of interactivity.

A Celebration of Fashion's Magic

“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” runs from May 10th to September 2nd at the Met. This exhibit is a must-see for anyone who appreciates fashion’s artistry, craftsmanship, and ability to transport us through time and awaken our senses.
